Charter NEX Receives SPC Innovator Award for General Mills Annie’s Cereal Liner

Milton, WI – April 5, 2019 – Charter NEX, North America’s leading independent manufacturer of the specialty films used in flexible packaging, received the SPC Innovator Awards in recognition of the development of a new cereal liner using 35% post-consumer recycled content suitable for food contact.

This cereal liner is one of several PCR-based sealant films in Charter NEX’s award winning GreenArrow™ portfolio.  Switching to a PCR-based sealant film is a natural first step in a sustainable packaging journey because it requires very little modification to the converting process.

Post-consumer recycled resins have come along way and Charter NEX continues to be on the forefront of evaluating new and improving sources.  “Several years ago, high quality streams of PCR polyethylene weren’t available and if they were, they weren’t suitable for direct food contact”, says Scott Hammer, Corporate Sustainability Leader.  “With our extrusion technology and these new resin sources, we are able to incorporate a higher percentage of PCR than before while giving brandowners a package that still performs well compared to virgin plastics”, says Hammer.

Charter NEX’s GreenArrow™ portfolio continues to expand with a new set of films solutions ready to hit the market later this year.
