Sustainable Film Options, Internally Green Processes

Charter NEX Films strives to reduce the impact that our internal film manufacturing operations have on the environment through sustainable practices and source reduction initiatives. In addition, we provide our customers with custom flexible film solutions designed to help them produce packaging and products that are inherently more sustainable.

We have worked with a variety of sustainable film types, including compostable bio films. We currently produce compostable films used in commercialized structures that have been ASTM D6400 certified by our customers for biodegradation.

Bio Films exhibit one or more of the following characteristics

  • Decomposable
  • Biodegradable
  • Compostable
  • Breaks down in nature

Benefits of Compostable Films

  • Aerobic degradation, which allows for the degradation of compounds by microorganisms in the presence of oxygen
  • Reduction of litter
  • Produces carbon dioxide, not methane

Sustainable Packaging

  • is beneficial, safe and healthy for individuals and communities throughout its life cycle
  • meets market criteria for performance and cost
  • is sourced, manufactured, transported and recycled using renewable energy
  • maximizes the use of renewable or recycled source materials
  • is manufactured using clean film production technologies and best practices

Charter NEX Films Internal Sustainability Activities

Charter NEX Films strives to reduce the impact that our internal film manufacturing operations have on the environment through sustainable practices and source reduction initiatives. Aware of the possible environmental impact of its operations from the beginning, Charter NEX Films has worked to reduce that impact by several means, including these examples:

  • Qualified for the State of Wisconsin Focus on Energy Program by installing energy-efficient lighting, refrigeration and HVAC systems
  • For shipping, utilizing an integrated system to maximize outbound TL shipments and minimize LTL shipments
  • Recycling 98% of all cardboard and core materials
  • Utilization of building design techniques and natural lighting to save up to 25% in energy costs
  • Ongoing paper, can and plastic recycling program in offices and plants
  • Dust-collection systems to prevent contamination of indoor and outdoor environments
  • Occupancy sensors installed to control lighting in areas where activity is occasional
